Moving & Handling Legislation

There are several laws that govern Moving & Handling. These include:

  • The Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974(HSWA)
  • Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992(Amended 2002)
  • Management of Health & Safety at work Regulations 1999
  • Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
  • Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER)

Health & Safety at Work Act (Etc) 1974

This legislation is the main piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety in Great Britain. Under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 the Employee:

  • Has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health & safety
  • Has a duty of care to other employees, clients, visitors, etc
  • Must co-operate with the employer in performing duties under the act.

    

Employer Must:

  • Ensure safe place of work
  • Provide safe equipment
  • Provide information, training, instruction & supervision.
