Drug administration & record keeping

It is good practice that the designated person prepares themselves appropriately.

This can be done by ensuring that you have all the equipment and devices which aid the administration of medicines.u00a0

Prior to administering drugs the following checks must be conducted.

  • Identity of the patient u2013 be 100% certain of the identity of the patient. Involve the service user.
  • Check that the dose has not already been administered previously.
  • Check that you have the right MAR sheet
  • The prescription & label is clearly written, name, form, route, strength & dose of medication

  • Allergies or previous adverse drug reactions
  • Know the therapeutic use of the drug (normal dosage, side effects, precautions and contra u2013 indications
  • Check the expiry date (where it exists)
  • Check for contra-indications (contact the prescriber when C u2013 I are discovered)
