The Back

The back is a complex system consisting of various elements. It has 33 bones also known as vertebrae, 24 discs, the spinal chord, spinal nerves and 640 muscles. The upper 24 vertebrae are separated by discs that act as cushions.

The spine

Any movement of the limbs involves a pre-setting of the position of the spine. The shape of the spine consists of 4 defined curves.

  • The cervical ( Neck) curve
  • The Thoracic (Chest) curve 12
  • The Lumbar (Low Back) curve
  • The Sacrum (Tail bone)
  • The Coccyx (Tail)

The spinal cord runs through the length of the spine. It is a half inch thick cable of nerves about 45cm long which directs all activities below the neck level. The back has 31 pairs of nerves branching out from the spinal cord and send information between the brain and other parts of the body.
