Acquired Brain Injuries challenge an individual’s quality of life, dignity, and independence. People who have a brain injury have to adjust and learn to live life as fully as possible, often needing to relearn previously acquired skills.

They need care from those with knowledge and understanding of how to effectively support and rehabilitate them.

Who should take this course?

  • Healthcare Assistants, Support workers, Care assistants, and Community services.

Course Objectives

  • To provide the learner with a clear understanding of the basic anatomy of the brain and the forms and impact of Acquired brain injury.
  • To provide awareness and enable the learner to be able to provide support and rehabilitation to persons with Acquired brain injury.

 

Learning Outcomes

 

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

 

  • Understand how the brain works and the part it plays in the everyday functioning of the body, including movement, thought, language, memory and controlling of the senses.
  • Understand the terminology used in ABI.
  • Know how brain injury is often sustained and the various forms of ABI.
  • Know the consequences of brain injury on individuals, families, and carers.
  • Learn and understand practical strategies and advice on how to work with a person who is affected by a brain injury, including helping a person adjust to living with a brain injury.
  • Discuss the role of rehabilitation in ABI.
